Ask an Accountant

Business, Moldovan Style (No, It’s Not About Wine)

Business, Moldovan Style (No, It’s Not About Wine)

Without disclosing any personal data, but (proudly): a customer of a gift shop ordered balloons “with the word sex” for her 75-year-old husband. Although it might just be a wish. But…

First nose, as sommeliers say: friendly envy.

Some people really know how to live… A beautiful business and interesting requests!

Second nose: doubts. Things aren’t that bad for us either.

Contrary to popular belief, accounting is never boring: legislation changes every year, sometimes mid-year, and in special cases on the twenty-eighth of the month! Then you get to explain, in ten different ways:

  • how salaries are calculated (to employees) and why we are paying so much tax again (to the director);
  • why an electronic invoice can’t simply be sent by post or courier (to the buyer);
  • how less money arrived on the business card than left the account (to the director);
  • why reports are filed on the last day (to new entrepreneurs);
  • who is to blame (to Herzen), what is to be done (to Chernyshevsky) and who killed Kennedy (to Agent Mulder).

And other frequently asked questions in our “Ask an Accountant” column.

Call us

Some people who don’t know accounting up close (myself included, fifteen years ago) naively believe that this profession involves a lot of maths and little contact with people.

Yet the very first-year textbook states in black and white that the first science underlying accounting is philosophy.

As for the importance of connections, knocking on the doors of various institutions and the other “joys” of dealing with all kinds of officials, I won’t even start.

So the business coaches are wrong when they say our profession will disappear once the supercomputer arrives: in Moldova, at least, even a chip in the middle of your forehead will still require a paper certificate. From HR. With a stamp.

So, third nose: into the wind! We’re not done fighting yet.
